Renowned father-and-son huqin players Wong On-yuen and Wong Sun-tat will give two recitals in early August.
The two huqin masters will perform a number of melodies including gaohu ensemble The Butterfly Lovers exerpts, erhu duet Spring, erhu solo Reflections of the Moon on the Waters and Torrents of the River.
Huqin (pronounced hoo-chin) is a general term for the two-stringed bowed instruments that include the erhu, jinghu, gaohu, banhu and zhonghu.
Wong On-yuen is one of the most active Chinese music performers in the music and recording circle. Wong has given more than a hundred recitals in Hong Kong and many other cities.
He has collaborated with many famous Chinese and Western symphony orchestras, and has also made 26 discs as a soloist and produced 26 albums of Chinese music.
His son, Wong Sun-tat, won the championship in the erhu open section at the age of nine. The younger Wong has given erhu recitals in Beijing and Hong Kong and joined his father in staging father-and-son concerts in the United States, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
In 1997, he became a full member of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and is currently a gaohu deputy principal of the orchestra.
The huqin concert by Wong On-yuen and Wong Sun-tat will be staged at 8pm on August 8 at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre theatre and August 9 at the Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre theatre.
Tickets for the show are $100 and $70 at URBTIX outlets.
The programme, another initiative in the Arts Care series, is presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department.
